Montana tribal nations face challenges to their sovereignty and democratic participation. In Congress, I will partner with tribal governments to help meet those challenges. In 2020, the Supreme Court’s decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma, was a long overdue enforcement of our federal government’s treaties with specific tribes. I will support legislation to codify the federal government’s obligations to fulfill their treaty obligations with tribal nations. Additionally, Federal legislation is needed to nullify the laws passed by Republicans that make it harder for Native Americans to vote.
