Fair Treatment

Fair Treatment

We have to eliminate racial bias in the state and federal criminal justice systems. In Montana, tribal members make up 6% of our population, but 21% of the inmates in men’s state prisons and 34% of the inmates in women’s state prisons. Nearly half of native inmates had no criminal history before their current sentence. Other states are implementing reforms to offset racial bias by redacting identifying information on charging documents so prosecutors charge only on the seriousness of the crime, rather than the race or other personal characteristics of the accused. Congress must pass laws to ensure the enforcement happens with fairness. Source: https://monicatranel.com/issues/ 7/25/2022
