Alternate Work Program & Remote Location Work

Alternate Work Program & Remote Location Work

What problem does it solve? This solves several problems: 1. There is less required office space, which means offices can be condensed. The State of New Jersey directly saves money on leases/real estate for buildings and parking for those employees who participate. 2. An employee is able to commit more of their focus to their job with more hours in the day at work and less hours commuting. 2. It gives employees the flexibility they may desire which provides a better work/life balance and improved employee morale. What is your solution and who does it apply to? It will provide employees an option to work longer days and in turn, have off an additional day per week and/or work from a remote location. This will apply to any department which can accommodate this without a hardship and any employees within those departments who would like to participate. What is the anticipated impact? Direct cost-savings for The State of New Jersey and its employees, improved work productivity, improved work/life balance, improved employee morale, improved experience for the public.

Points

I would like to see this implemented at the DOE

If not every day, then an option to work remotely 2-4 days per week.

I'd like to be included in this team if the idea makes it to the top 20. I strongly believe in telecommuting. However, I know of a specific abuse of it, which I don't want to elaborate on here, and I would want to ensure we implement guards against it.

Longer work day to finish projects, I've often stayed later to finish a projects, without being compensated.

I've worked at places that allowed remote work. It allowed for better work/life balance, less commuting time, more time to concentrate on the work at hand. I actually had to set an alarm to remember to stop working!

It would increase morale and allow for a better work life balance. I would LOVE to be included on this team.

Let's support this idea. State employees are not being compensated for there work. But can be appreciated in other areas. This program will allow State workers a day off for medical, elderly, child care, education reasons, etc.

Managers looking to create a flexible work culture should avoid a one-size-fits-all approach; dictating exactly how these policies may be used can make them less effective. Talk with your team about your expectations, so there are no surprises later on. For example, if you set a policy that employees may arrive late or leave early when they need to, do you want them to give you advance notice? Of course, trust is going to be a big factor. you should trust them to get the work done.

This should happen! But, we need the infrastructure in place. Remote working requires deliverable based accountability & digitization. Digital data / real time analysis are KEY to work culture change. We first need a rapidly deployable digitization strategy at least effective cost. Post #283 achieves that, check it out, which can make modernization of working culture feasible and actuate cost savings of remote working without sacrificing productivity & service delivery timeframes.
